Antony had gone up to his room after supper, ostensibly to sort out his notes from the morning’s meeting but in reality to deal with his post. Another letter had arrived; he was beginning to recognise the handwriting now and could guess at the contents. It was just as bad as he’d thought it would be, in fact worse: WHAT WILL SHE SAY WHEN SHE FINDS OUT YOU’RE A BASTARD?
Antony shook his head over the message, puzzled as much by the content as the virulence. He knew he was no saint, but he didn’t think he was that bad. He’d used protective gloves to open the letter, as Detective Tierney had instructed him. He would take it to the police station tomorrow morning and hand it over. This one had come to his new lodgings and that meant whoever was sending them knew where he was living, and that was a very real concern to him.
The police had told him they were keeping an eye out and he had to believe them, but he was more than a little worried. If this madman knew where he lived, was he watching where he went, and did that mean he knew about his meeting with Professor Walker? Should he tell him about this latest development? He had told Kate Walker a little of his trouble. He didn’t wish harm to come to such a nice woman. Would the police tell Walker if he didn’t?
Antony stared blankly at the wallpaper before he became aware that there was a gentle tapping at his bedroom door and Amy was calling his name through the woodwork. ‘Antony?’
Antony slid the paper and envelope into his briefcase before standing up and going over to the door. He opened it and smiled at the sight that met his eye. Amy was indeed relaxed with him. Her hair was wrapped in a blue towel and the old sweat pants and T-shirt were not calculated to set him lusting after the nice figure inside them.
‘Hello. What’s up?’
‘Mam says Dad’s going down the pub and do you want to go, too?’
Antony raised an eyebrow, but shook his head.
‘Only I’ve got to go to work soon.’
Antony nodded, ‘I only went to the pub to eat. I’m not that keen on the pub scene, really.’ He frowned at the face in front of him. ‘I could babysit if your mum wants a night out, too.’
Amy giggled. ‘Mum?’
‘Why not? She might like a night out with your dad.’
Her mother, appearing at the top of the stairs with the suddenness of a jack-in-the-box, looked with some surprise from her giggling daughter to the grave-faced man who was her lodger.
‘He says, “Do you want to go to the pub with Dad?” He says he’ll babysit.’ Amy turned a glowing face to her mother.
Joyce looked at Antony. ‘That’s really kind of you, Antony.’ She nodded her head at some inner thought. ‘That would be nice; it’s ages since we went out together.’ She spun on her heel and went down stairs again, calling, ‘Jack.
